Located in the heart of central Alabama, just outside of Birmingham, Bessemer, is a hidden gem of a city that is rich with history. Founded in 1887, Bessemer grew quickly in the early days through iron ore manufacturing. The founding population of Bessemer was less than 5,000; however, that would double by 1910, and almost double again by 1920. Since then, the city has experienced steady growth. Due to this growth, Bessemer was nicknamed “The Marvel City”. Now the city of Bessemer is home to about 27,000 residents, and growth continues to be a focus of the area.
As a “business-friendly” city, Bessemer is a hub in western Jefferson County and drives economic development in the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan area. This city is home to many major industries and corporations, including Amazon, Steyr Arms USA, Dollar General, BLOX and Milo’s Tea. Bessemer is also home to Medical West Hospital and the Bessemer Municipal Airport; the airport is a preferred destination for small plane traffic in the area.
