Bragg Mitchell Mansion Mobile AL, projects the quintessential image of the antebellum South: lush lawns manicured meticulously, blooming azaleas dazzling with color, and dappled shade cast from leafy oaks. The mansion has been home to several different families and is now a nationally-recognized national monument.
One of the most-photographed buildings in Mobile, the mansion was built in 1855 by Judge John Bragg for his wife and family to enjoy the Mobile social season from Thanksgiving to Mardi Gras. The family split their time between it and their cotton plantation outside Montgomery. When Judge Bragg died in 1878, the home passed through the hands of three more families before it was bought by the last private owner, the A.S. Mitchell family, who lived there from 1931 to 1965.

Bragg-Mitchell Mansion is a t-shaped, 13,000-square-foot Greek Revival mansion that has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972. Several years later, the home was donated by the Mitchell family foundation to the Explore Center to become the home of a new interactive science museum. However, the Explore Center wanted the historic integrity of the mansion preserved, so it built a separate science museum, the Gulf Coast Exploreum, and endeavored to restore the mansion to its former nineteenth century grandeur.
Bragg-Mitchell Mansion as it is known today was opened to the public in 1987 after $3 million in renovations and is now used for community wedding receptions, corporate dinners, and historic home tours.
The home has more than 14 rooms, seven of which are bedrooms. Other features include massive double parlors, a grand circular staircase, and elegant rooms furnished with fine antiques and crystal chandeliers.
Events and Rentals
Today, the mansion is host to a variety of events and rental activities, including wedding receptions, cocktail parties dinners, and luncheons.
Each private party includes access to mansion’s first floor, patio, and grounds for three to eight hours, depending on the nature of the event. A Bragg-Mitchell hostess will be available for the duration of the each event. For wedding receptions, use of the bridal suite (complete with private powder room), gathering room, and dressing room is included. Those with appointments to have their bridal portraits taken at the mansion will have full use of the Mansion and grounds, including the bridal suite.
The Mansion also periodically hosts teas as part of Mobile’s Historic Homes Tour. Finger sandwiches, light hors d’ouerves, and teas hot and cold are served in exquisite tea rooms or out on the sprawling verandas. Tours follow each tea event.

The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion gift shop is stocked with bridal accessories including bridal books, vintage handkerchiefs, silver pie/cake servers, and a variety of gifts for all wedding needs. For children with discerning tastes, miniature porcelain tea sets make a great gift, as do puzzles and books. Additionally, there is a selection of elegant linens, fine silver gifts, interesting books, handmade notecards, and more for any occasion.
