Bocas del Toro Archipelago

With a smaller population of about 13,000, Bocas del Toro (also called Bocas Town) is the capital city of the Bocas del Toro Archipelago district. It offers a temperate climate ranging from the low 70’s to the higher 80’s, and easy access to Panama City via its one-hour flight time. Situated on the Caribbean in western Panama, Bocas del Toro’s laid-back lifestyle, sandy beaches, sparkling blue-green waters and lush rainforests offer the ultimate in island living. Isla Colon, the main island in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, has a public hospital, although for major healthcare most expatriates head to David or Panama City.

Real Estate

Bocas del Toro properties and beach front real estate is affordable for retirees, vacation homes, fishing property or other uses.

Transportation

Bocas del Toro is accessible either by air or boat, with most visitors flying into the Bocas del Toro “Isla Colon” International Airport. Reaching islands and islets requires a private boat or water taxi. Although there are a few roads between cities, very few people own cars. A ferry regularly runs between Bocas Town and mainland Almirante with limited passenger space.

Activities

Popular activities among locals include boating and sightseeing, diving, angling for snapper and tuna in the clear Caribbean waters, snorkeling in the coral reefs or nature-hiking through the mangroves.  Jason loved the ATV adventure provided by the group at Flying Pirates on Isla Colon, which includes mud trails through the dense rain forest, in addition to coastal trails through the sand.  We like to stop for a dip in the blue waters of La Pacina and snorkel at the Blue Lagoon.

Bocas del Toro boasts 50 local eateries from casual beach fare to fine dining, and its numerous bars and nightclubs offer after-hours excitement.  One of Jason’s favorites is the local sushi restaurant, Raw, which offers incredibly creative rolls and side dishes, as well as fresh fruit cocktails.
