Only in Fairhope have I found “saintly” adults who willingly escort dozens of children to school each morning in rain, shine or freezing temperature conditions, a practice knows as the “Walking School Bus.”
The Walking School Bus of Fairhope Elementary School has revolutionized our mornings in the Dorman house. Being able to park near the wonderful Fairhope Public Library and take a morning stroll with friends is great for our moods and our bodies! In addition, on days I need to get to work early I can opt for the car line drop-off (starting at 7:05 am!) and we are all on time. My children are excited to chase their friends around the library’s yard before school and then walk side-by-side the few shorts blocks over to FES. What kid wouldn’t enjoy that?!

The incredibly patient group of adults that volunteer each morning include Fairhope locals, parents, teachers, and coaches. I am always amazed that these wonderful people do not even look tired or grumpy as they supervise the “hive” of energetic elementary students. The volunteers greet each child with smiles as they get out of their car to sign in at the table. Our fearless and respected leader, Mrs. Charlene Lee, knows each child by name and seems to keep them organized and safe with such ease. The students are comfortable with her and often surround her en masse requesting to lead the morning chant, “Smart Kids, Smart Walk, Let’s Roll!” to signal to the entire group that it is time to start our stroll to the elementary school.
My daughters love that they are recognized for walking routinely with a Walking School Bus certificate and a bus-shaped “foot bead” charm. These are coveted trinkets and we love that this is another way to encourage healthy daily exercise. My husband and I feel it is important that our children get to spend time with fresh air and exercise before stepping into the structure of the school day. The kids enjoy spotting butterflies, squirrels, and berries growing along our walk through downtown Fairhope. In addition, the small detour down to the Fairhope Mosher Castle, where special visitors in costume often greet us, each Friday morning is a special treat. If you would like to walk with us you can register at FES or online.
