Agent:  How did you know this was the home you were meant to buy?

Seller:  “I am the original owner of the home located at 2 Moss Oak Court in Fairhope. I had great input into every detail of design of the home both inside and out including landscaping.  I wanted a home that reminded me of homes found in New Orleans with lots of doors for ventilation when weather permits.  I selected the location for several reasons.  It is in the Fruit and Nut section of Fairhope…..an easy walk to the bay (less than a minute) and a 15-20 minute walk to downtown. I wanted to be close to the bay without being on the bay.  I wanted to enjoy all the bay had to offer including the spectacular sunsets (weather permitting) any day I chose or watch a thunderstorm rolling across the bay waters. I loved the fact that if in-climate weather damaged or destroyed a pier, the city would quickly rebuild it without cost to me.  And added plus is that if and when the electricity goes offline, the city gets the hospital online first and then starts at the bay and works toward the city.  I have never been without electricity more this two and a half hours  therefore, I never felt the need for a generator.  Living by the bay has its definite advantages other than beauty.  The fact that my home is not in a flood plane since it sits at least 20 plus feet above sea level was a real plus. I loved the fact that there would be only 5 homes in a gated community and it was a cul de sac for easy accessibility.  The lot the house sits on is a large one by today’s standards….90 x 130 ft if memory serves me correctly. Another feature that was very important to me was there there was immediate police and fire protection available if ever needed since it lived within the city limits. My safety and that of my child was paramount to me in making a decision to live where I do. To me, there is no more beautiful tree lined street than Pier Street. I love turning left under a canopy of trees and seeing my house waiting for me to arrive like an old friend.”

Agent:  Were schools a factor in your decision to purchase this home?

Seller:  “My daughter was two and a half when I built this home.  This was not an imminent factor in my decision to purchase the lot and build.  However, I was aware of the excellent public schools available to the children here.”

Agent:  What have become your top 5-10 favorite features of the home?

Seller:  “I love to sit on my porch in the early morning with my coffee and four legged friends and watch the sky go from dark to light.  I love the side yard where I have room to  play fetch with my dogs.  I love my ten foot ceilings and hardwood floors on on both levels.  I love that I designed my home for entertaining and ease of flow for guests.  Love, love, love my kitchen.  Having the master bedroom upstairs is not a problem due to an elevator that makes my entire second floor accessible AND buyers will understand why when they see the view from the master porch.  Coffered ceilings in the living and dining room were not in the initial plan but add such an elegant sophistication without being too formal.  I love the custom mill work and the solid mahogany doors throughout and the fact that they can be opened to let the outside in.”

Agent:  Where do you find yourself spending the most time in the home and why?

Seller:  “Winter or summer, I spend most of my time in my den and kitchen.  Spring and summer, you’ll find me on the porch with a glass of iced tea.”

Agent:  What improvements have you made to the home or property over the years?

Seller:  “My home flooded due to a defective Kohler pressure assist toilet in the master bath.  The lower interior had to be totally stripped to the frame, mold removed and rebuilt on the inside. The upstairs had to be stripped to about  three feet above the flooring.  This gave me an opportunity to make changes  to the original floor plan and  add an elevator.  I reduced the size of the laundry room to make a huge addition to the master closet. The kitchen was moved and den was expanded.”

Agent:  What are your favorite grocery stores and shops in the area?

Seller:  “I shop for groceries mainly at Publix.  I like their produce when I can’t get it locally.  Fairhope has many wonderful and unique shops.  Since I like to cook and entertain, I frequent the Happy Olive on Del aMare fairly regularly and for clothes, I like M&F since they have a great selection of linen clothing. I use the Lyons Share for framing needs and have bought some art for myself and gifts for others. Many  gift shops, children’s clothing stores, restaurants, pet supply store.  Fairhope has everything you need.”

Agent:  Any interests or hobbies you enjoy on or near the property?

Seller:  “My daughter rode horses when she was growing up.  There are several barns around that teach horse riding lessons.  I like to paint so I do that under an oak tree in my back yard.  A nice breeze makes the paint dry faster and the light is excellent.  Fairhope is a photography paradise for sunsets, people, wild life, puppies etc.  Fairhope is a real dog friendly town.  I bank with the National Bank of Commerce and my dogs go in with me and they always have ample dog treats available.  They are the best bank ever.”

Agent:  Average utility costs in summer and winter?

Seller:  “The utility bills vary from year to year pending weather conditions.  The drier, the more water will be consumed for watering grass etc. The utility bills included everything….electricity, gas, water, garbage and trash, add ons and taxes.  In the summer, it averages $500-600 and winter around $300.00.”

Agent:  What will you miss most about living in or owning this property, as well as the surrounding community?

Seller:  “I will be saying good bye to a very special part of my life.  One in which  my mother was still living, I was watching my daughter  grow up and I was working hard on my career.   My mother died.  (The apartment was designed for her). My daughter is all grown up now and I am now retired. Those days are over now and it is time to close that  chapter of my life and move on to the next one.  I will miss my neighbors, my home, my friends and my hometown Fairhope.  I’ve lived here for 33 years.  It’s been the right choice for me and my family. I sincerely hope that the next family that  buys my house will love it as much as I have. I hope they will make wonderful memories and be happy with their choice to live  in Fairhope, by the bay, under the canopy of oak trees at 2 Moss Oak Court.”
