My family loves fresh vegetables and local honey, so the Fairhope AL Fall Farmer’s Market is perfect for us!

It’s a beautiful time of year to stroll down School Street next to Fairhope Public Library on a Thursday afternoon and taste the local vendor’s samples. We experimented with different salsas, bloody mary mix, and barbecue sauces that were provided to “try before you buy.” The farmers, bakers, and harvesters set up each Thursday before 3:00 and are helpful with answering questions and discussing recipes until the pack up around 6:00.

Try as a might, I have not been able to thwart the pests and critters that feast in my backyard nightly. My ripe blueberries were picked by birds, tomatoes were eaten by caterpillars, and my still-green Satsumas are now being knocked down by playful squirrels. We will keep trying to grow our own, but our pickins’ are pretty slim. As much as we like to garden, it is nice to supplement our dinner menu with the delicious, locally grown greens, squash, and okra from the Fall Farmer’s Market.

For a small town, the Farmer’s Market packs in a big selection! My family was excited to find local coffee, sweet potatoes, meats, seafood, honey, and fresh eggs! My husband likes the new L.A. Gourmet’s Bloody Mary mix we found and my daughters love the miniature blueberry key lime pie from Broken Arm Mama’s they brought home. I have enjoyed the fresh, local eggs from Nature Nine Farms. My oldest daughter’s selection was a jar of fig preserves that she picked up from Lele’s. Don’t forget that at 4:00 each Thursday children’s activities are provided by the Fairhope Public Library.
