204 Liberty Street is the perfect home! Living in the Fruit and Nut district is a dream to some and for this lovely couple, it was a dream come true. When they sat down and designed this home, they traveled to Pennsylvania, bought a barn, dismantled it and used the 200-year-old hand-hewn beams in the main living area. The wide plank flooring is re-planed barn flooring and the kitchen cabinets are made out of chestnut barn flooring that the sellers had re-planed and milled. They brought back antique cypress doors from New Orleans that are used throughout the home with reworked antique “box locks” and antique door knobs. The slate around the fireplace has since been painted and is also used as the kitchen back-splash. The home also features Pennsylvania barn roofing and a kitchen ceiling made out of tin from another barn. The sellers say “this was a fun home to build.” It was also featured in the “Lagniappe” house in Fairhope’s Homes Tour (Tour of Historic Homes) in 2010.

The sellers’ top favorite thing about their home is, of course, the screened-in porch — because no home is complete in the Fruit and Nut district without a screened-in porch! They chose to run the porch the whole length of the home and they both admit that this is one of the things they miss most about living in this home. The sellers also LOVE the location because it is in walking distance to the bay for a relaxing evening or downtown Fairhope to visit the adorable shops and restaurants. They also miss how much storage this home has. Storage, storage, and more storage! As their realtor, I asked them if the schools were a factor in purchasing this home and they responded with, “I would always have a home in an area with great schools. Great schools are an indication of a town that cares and is forward thinking.” Most of the time, my clients would find themselves in the kitchen because of the wife’s love for cooking and this home definitely offered a great kitchen to cook in! The Chef’s range with a double oven is absolutely to die for. If she wasn’t in the kitchen, you would find her on their spacious porch admiring the beauty of this home and neighborhood.

Now that they have moved over to the Bluff, they really miss the charm and all the memories in this home. They loved being able to walk downtown to her favorite bookstore and nearby coffee shops. Fairhope is a town where you can just sit down, drink your coffee, and watch the world go by. When we lived here we barely drove anywhere. Our family would always walk downtown or to the bay. You can even walk to the local grocery store, Greer’s. There is also a nice little playground for children just around the corner or walk 3 blocks to Murphy and take the kids to the Fairhope Park that is complete with a splash pad and pirate ship. All this being said, my clients stated, “We sure do miss the Fruit and Nut District. It is small town America at its best. When we built this home, we thought of our kids coming home “together” with their families but with busy lifestyles and now that our kids have kids, it just doesn’t work that way. It’s hard to get 5 children and their families all in the same place at the same time. We are excited for the next family to buy this home and call it their own.”
