Celebration Church Belize Mission Trip 2016

My first journal entry from our Celebration Church Belize Mission Trip 2016

The Central American air stuck to my skin like a damp towel as we stepped down from the plane to the tarmac in Belize City. A gentle breeze brushed against my face with an uneven mixture of fresh air and diesel carbons, followed by direction from uniformed locals, with eyes wrapped in dark shades, ushering our missionary team toward the immigration area. Before the passport stamp had a chance to dry, we spotted a friendly airport employee wearing a barely worn University of Alabama hat, to which my mission teammate, Chad Penry, let out an overly boisterous “Roll Tide!”

With luggage and medical supplies in toe, we were greeted by Pastor Amil Dela Rosa, who politely asked if we were traveling with Pastor Johnny Hunt, which gave me a sense of peace that only a native speaking local could provide. Pastor Amil is small in stature, yet carries a big smile and speaks with the body language of an old friend. His church bus, though lacking in luster from many miles of dutiful service, offered the sheltered comforts of a humble home.

With the buzz of the modest airport in our rear view, we began the trek toward the Cayo District at the edge of the Guatemalan boarder. The brown pavement felt like coarse gravel beneath the rubber soles of the tall tires, with sudden jolts from the occasional shallow bump in the road. The interruptions from the infrastructure was enough to jolt my slumping posture upright, making it impossible to sneak in a power nap and satisfy the sleep debt levied from a dark morning departure from the states.
