The History of the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion
Originally built by Judge John Bragg so his family could enjoy the social season in Mobile, the mansion was purchased by the A.S. Mitchell family, the last private owners, for $20,000 in 1931.
The Mitchell family lived in the mansion for over 30 years before the A.S. Mitchell foundation donated it to the Explore Center.
Originally slated to be an interactive science museum in the seventies, the Explore Center built a separate science museum and restored the Bragg-Mitchell to the height of its antebellum beauty so as to not destroy the historic interior. In 1972, Bragg-Mitchell Mansion was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
